What Is Roundtable?

The BSA's Roundtable meetings are monthly supplemental training and information sessions for leaders and involved parents from Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity and Venturing. The allusion to Camelot's roundtable conjures up images of errant knights assembling to discuss the problems of the people (Scouts) they serve. Unit leaders join for fun and fellowship while learning new skills, tricks, stunts, games, crafts, ceremonies, songs, skits and more! Cub Scout leaders will also gain ideas on how to the following month's Cub Scout monthly core value. The Roundtable meeting is also a place for sharing ideas and activities with leaders from other scouting units.

Separate Roundtables are held for Cub Scout and Boy Scout leaders. The objective of the Roundtable is to give unit leaders program ideas; information on policy, events, training and an opportunity to share experiences and enjoy fun and fellowship with other Scouting leaders. As a result of the roundtable experience, unit leaders will be inspired, motivated, and able to provide a stronger program for their own scouts.

When and where are they held?

Both are held on the second Wednesday of each month from 7:30-9:30 PM at the LDS Church on Cera Drive in San Jose (925 Cera Dr. San Jose, CA 95129).

The Adventure of Scouting

Scouts learn the attributes of good character become part of a youth as he or she learns to cooperate to meet outdoor challenges that may include extreme weather, difficult trails and portages, and dealing with nature's unexpected circumstances.

Learning by doing is a hallmark of outdoor education. Unit meetings offer information and knowledge used on outdoor adventures. A leader may describe and demonstrate a Scouting skill at a meeting, but the way Scouts truly learn an outdoor skill is to do it themselves on a unit outing.

Scouts succeeds when every member of the unit, or patrol succeeds, and Scouts learn that good teamwork is the key to success.

Health and wellness is part of the outdoor experience. As Scouts hike, paddle, climb, bike, or ride, their muscles become toned and their aerobic capacity increases.

Service to others and good citizenship is learned through such outdoor activities as conservation projects, collecting food, building trails and shelters, and conducting community service projects that promote healthy living. Through helping other people, Scouts learn to appreciate how they can share themselves and their blessings to those in need.

VENTURING

Venturing is a new "old" program of the Boy Scouts of America. Originally part of the Exploring Division, it finally came into its own in 1998. It has become the fastest growing program of the BSA. Young adults have found through the Venturing program the outlet they have been looking for in their age group.

It has been an exciting time of fast growth and great learning experiences. The Venturing youth cabinet is in a unique position to promote this exciting program through their active involvement in their regions and throughout the United States.

There are continued misconceptions about what Venturing is all about. Venturing is not for young boys and girls but rather for young adults. They are able to do more and go further as a Venturer or Sea Scout in a Venturing crew or Sea Scout ship.

Venturing provides positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Venturing provides the skills needed for young adults to make ethical choices, experience a fun program full of adventure and challenges, acquire leadership skills, and to take advantage of opportunities to advance their skills and knowledge in the areas of high adventure, sports, arts, hobbies, religious life, and Sea Scouting.

Many of the courses can be taken online at www.myscouting.org. A login is required, but anyone may create a user account and view the courses. Get connected with Scouting Community!

Scouting Community provides a safe environment for Scouts over the age of 13, Volunteers and Scouting Professionals to discuss Scouting topics and learn more about how to be a better Scout and Scouter.

To join the BSA’s new social network, You must have a MyScouting account, be at least 13 years old and have a paid membership with a valid Boy Scout Member ID.

If you don't have a MyScouting account, go to MyScouting to create one. Enter information including your member ID and submit your account details. Wait for a reply e-mail to activate your account.

If you've already setup a MyScouting account:

Log into MyScouting and select Scouting Community.
This is your private profile; toggle between it and your public profile. Edit your public profile with information you’d like to share. Select an avatar or image to represent you.
Make friends. Go to the Members page and find someone. Go to their page and select the Add to Friends link.
Check out the Forums. Start reading the forum posts. Familiarize yourself with how forums are organized.
Join a Group. Go to the Groups page and find a group that interests you. If it’s public, you can join. If it’s public by invitation, you can request to join.
Give yourself a full week to check out all the features of the site. Make forum posts to ask questions and learn more.
